Green Veggies Boost Immunity For Mission Viejo Kids

Green Veggies Boost Immunity For Mission Viejo Kids

Do your children catch every cold that goes around Mission Viejo? Do they regularly have earaches, coughs, or runny noses? Including more green vegetables in their diets could boost kids’ immune systems and help them stay healthy, according to a study in the journal Cell.1

The study found that green vegetables help produce a chemical that is important for a strong immune system. The chemical provides signals to the immune cells in the gut and skin, helping them to function properly.

If your Mission Viejo kids are like mine, convincing them to eat more green vegetables is as hard as getting them to clean their rooms. However, Orange County parents can find sneaky ways to add more green vegetables to their children’s diets.

My kids love pasta and sauce so I puree spinach into the pasta sauce, disguising the leafy green immune booster. Adding kale to protein smoothies is another way to sneak green vegetables into their tummies.

Healthy Snacks For Happy Studying In Mission Viejo

Healthy Snacks For Happy Studying In Mission Viejo

Welcome to my Orange County children’s health blog. My fifth grader’s elementary teacher recently sent home a note encouraging good homework habits for all of her Mission Viejo students. The note included this suggestion: ‘Eat a healthy snack before sitting down to study.’

My kids and I sat down to brainstorm some healthy snacks they could eat before beginning their homework each afternoon. After compiling our list we headed to our favorite Orange County grocery store to stock up on after-school snacks.

Here are my kids top ten healthy homework snacks!

Frozen grapes (or other favorite fruit)
String cheese
Fruit leather
Dried apricots
Nuts
Hummus with veggies
Yogurt
Celery dipped in peanut butter
Fruit smoothies
Popcorn

Orange County kids can focus better when they have healthy snacks handy. Another important thing to remember is that kids are more likely to eat healthy snacks if they can choose their favorites. I am a local Xocai Healthy Chocolate representative and an advocate for children’s health in California. AAP Immunization Information For Orange County Parents

AAP Immunization Information For Orange County Parents In the past century, the rates of many serious diseases in the United States have significantly declined, in some cases, they have been virtually eradicated.

Many Orange County people have never met a person with measles, polio, small pox, rubella, tetanus, or diphtheria; though these diseases killed thousands of California children in past generations.

One of the main reasons many dangerous communicable childhood diseases have been minimized in our area is due to Orange County children’s immunizations. The increase in immunization use has gone a long way to improve health in our California communities.

Recently, I have noticed that many Orange County parents are questioning the children’s immunization schedule. I came across an informative American Academy of Pediatrics FAQ sheet that addresses most of the common concerns.

The AAP document entitled ‘The Vaccine Schedule, Why Is It Like That?,’ can be downloaded at http://www.aap.org/healthtopics/immunizations.cfm

I certainly learned a lot after reading the FAQ sheet and thought I would tell you about it here in my Orange County children’s health blog.

I think it is important for all Orange County parents like myself to be reminded of the scientific evidence that supports the use of the immunization schedule.

Healthy Mission Viejo Kids Are Well Rested

Healthy Mission Viejo Kids Are Well Rested

Getting an adequate amount of sleep is essential to the health of Mission Viejo kids. During sleep, muscles, skin, and bones actually grow and repair themselves. The immune system is recharged during sleep, so this is especially important during the Orange County cold and flu season. Because the brain processes the stimulus and information it received during the previous day, sleep is crucial for healthy brain development.

Parents in the Los Angeles, Riverside , and Orange County areas should do everything they can to make bedtime work for their family. One of the most important things is for Orange County parents to model healthy sleep behavior for their children.

If you want your child to follow a consistent bedtime schedule, you’ll need to follow one yourself.

It’s also important to check out your child’s sleep environment in your Orange County home. What is the temperature and noise level of the room? White noise might help your child sleep better. Fans or humidifiers that can be purchased at any Orange County Wal-Mart, Riverside drug store, or Los Angeles Target store are inexpensive and do the job well.

Give your child a screen-free room in which to fall asleep. This means no TVs, computers, iPods, or cell phones. In fact, turning off all screens an hour or two before bedtime will help the whole family fall asleep on time.

Make sure you include the children in planning a bedtime routine and then stick to it. If they have trouble saying goodbye after you’ve tucked them in, try giving them a special security object like a blanket or stuffed animal to fall asleep with.

Family Meal Time in Mission Viejo

Family Meal Time in Mission Viejo

Mission Viejo parents want to make sure that their kids spend time doing things that will help them be healthy and successful. Because of this, juggling the family schedule and prioritizing activities are a major part of parenting in the Orange County , Riverside , and Los Angeles areas.

With all this competition for your child’s time, you may be surprised to learn of the advantages Mission Viejo kids receive when families make time to eat dinner together.

Studies have shown that kids who have frequent family dinners benefit in the following ways:

Improved grades
Eating healthier meals
Less likely to try cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana
Increase in family communication
Less likely to become overweight or obese

If you want to help establish a more regular dinner time for your family, here are some tips for Orange County families. Start by setting a small goal, like sitting down for dinner twice a week, and then add days on after that. Next, involve the kids by letting them help plan and prepare the meals and set the table. Lastly, always make mealtime a technology-free zone: no TV or phones allowed!

And remember, even if you’re in a rush and have to pick up dinner at a local Orange County , Riverside , or Los Angeles restaurant, take the time to sit down together to eat. Your family will still enjoy many of these benefits.

Orange County Mega-Meals: Don’t Eat The Whole Thing!

Orange County Mega-Meals: Don't Eat The Whole Thing!

It’s no wonder that many Mission Viejo children and teens struggle with weight issues. What is considered a ‘normal’ food portion has been getting bigger and bigger. In some cases, as with gargantuan Mission Viejo fast food soft drinks and Orange County Costco muffins-on-steroids, it is absolutely ridiculous. And extremely unhealthy.

The findings from three large national surveys demonstrate:

‘Hamburgers have expanded by 23 percent; a plate of Mexican food is 27 percent bigger; soft drinks have increased in size by 52 percent, snacks, whether they be potato chips, pretzels or crackers, are 60 percent larger.’1

Mission Viejo restaurants and Orange County food and beverage manufacturers are not the only ones sabotaging our children. Portion sizes have increased in homes, also.

If Mission Viejo parents are going to help their children maintain a healthy weight, learning proper portion sizes is critical. If we don’t know the size of a healthy portion, how can we teach our children?

The Mayo Clinic website has a great slide show that helps Orange County parents and other children’s health advocates understand what ‘4 ounces’ or a ‘half cup’ actually looks like. You can see it here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/portion-control/NU00267

Prevent Classroom Sickness In Orange County

Prevent Classroom Sickness In Orange County

To curb the spread of viruses, lice, and other kid’s health threats in Orange County schools, parents need to teach their kids proper hygiene practices and review them on a regular basis.

Here is a rundown of some unwelcome classroom visitors and steps to combat them:

  • Head lice: wash hands frequently, don’t share combs, hats, scarves.
  • Ringworm (skin infection with circular lesions, not actually caused by worms): keep sores covered, don’t share combs or clothing.
  • Pinkeye: vigilant hand washing can help stop the spread. Orange County parents should keep kids home if their eyes are pink or draining fluid.
  • Colds, flu, strep: anti-bacterial wipes and no-rinse hand sanitizer can supplement soap and water scrubbing. Remind kids not to share drinks, snacks, lotion, chap stick, and lip gloss.

Orange County children who know and practice these safeguards will be prepared when the next H1N1 threat visits Orange County.

Helping Orange County Kids Cope With Seasonal Allergies

Helping Orange County Kids Cope With Seasonal Allergies

Hello Orange County! Welcome to today’s children’s health and nutrition blog. Today, we are discussing seasonal allergies. Many Orange County parents wonder if their child’s sneezing and runny nose are temporary symptoms of a cold or seasonal allergies. Generally, colds also come with aches and a low fever and last only a week, while allergies can persist for an entire season. Orange County doctors are seeing new cases of seasonal allergies among people of all ages, especially adults. Is this an unintended result of more aggressive germ-fighting in childhood?

‘Researchers speculate that thanks to antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizers and other powerful germ-killing products, kids today are less likely to be exposed to the bacteria and viruses that help the immune system shift into gear and prevent them from developing allergies and asthma as they grow up.’1

Regardless of the possibility that allergies may persist into adulthood, there are several steps Orange County parents can take to help their child get through the allergy prone months with minimal discomfort:

Replace your filters (AC and furnace) at least every two or three months, and look for MERV ratings of 11 or 12 for maximum efficiency filters. Though it may be difficult during the hot Orange County months, remember to keep your windows closed at home and in the car. Check pollen levels online and try to have your child wait until evening to go outdoors when pollen counts are lower.

Have your child shower before going to bed to wash allergen out of his or her hair and skin so it won’t transfer to bedding and increase irritation during the night. You can also use plastic or allergen-proof covers for your child’s mattress, box springs, and pillows for extra protection.

Your Orange County doctor can test your child to determine the specific allergens and prescribe safe and effective medications.

Prevent Sports Mouth Injuries For Mission Viejo Kids

Prevent Sports Mouth Injuries For Mission Viejo Kids

Active Mission Viejo children are involved in a variety of different sports these days, and while this is great news for kid’s health, parents need to be aware of the risk of mouth injuries.

All Mission Viejo children participating in contact sports can reduce the risk of mouth and tooth injuries by wearing a mouthguard. Properly fitted mouth protectors can prevent broken or lost teeth as well as lip, tongue, and jaw injuries.

Kids mouth protectors come in a variety of styles. ‘One size fits all,’ boil and bite, and custom. Not surprisingly, custom-fitted mouth protectors are the safest and can be made by your Orange County dentist to make sure your child has a perfect fit.

Mouth protectors are extremely important for Orange County children undergoing orthodontic treatment. Metal braces can cause serious oral injuries in instances of impact. (It can also cost Orange County parents a bundle to replace broken braces.)

Los Angeles Kids Need A Healthy Plant-Based Diet

Los Angeles Kids Need A Healthy Plant-Based Diet

One of the best things you can do for your Los Angeles kids is to help them love plant foods. Kids who are exposed to a wide variety of live foods when they are young are more likely to continue eating them when they are grown.

Why are plant foods so important for Los Angeles families?

Plant-based foods have vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and protein. Live foods are generally low-fat, low-sodium, and, if unprocessed, have less toxins than processed foods.

Let’s help our Los Angeles kids eat better than most of us Los Angeles adults have eaten for the past three generations.

There is more to a plant-based diet than broccoli and carrots. Here are some plant-based meal and snack ideas to inspire you:

  • Legumes: beans, peas, lentils (hummus, black bean burritos, vegetarian chile)
  • Nuts and seeds: pecans, almonds, walnuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, (sunflower seeds on salads, granola with almonds, trail mix with nuts instead of M&Ms)
  • Whole grains: barley, spelt, millet, rye, quinoa, brown rice (spelt bread, whole wheat pasta, stir-fry with brown rice)
  • Fresh and dried fruit: bananas, berries, citrus, melons (blueberry barley pancakes, fruit plate with yogurt-honey dip, dried apricots in brown bag lunches)
  • Veggies: (mashed sweet potatoes, spinach salad with raspberry vinaigrette, pizza with green pepper, mushrooms and onion instead of pepperoni)

One of my favorite foods is made from the super-nutritious cacao plant. It is high in antioxidants and taste like candy. To try XProtein Meal, contact me today.
